In reply to L. Prom dresses can go to organizations that collect dresses, suits, shoes and accessories for teens who cannot afford everything needed to dress up for prom. Collection is usually in January and February for giveaway events hosted in March. Check local organizations like food pantries/meal services that also have "clothing closets". Mom's organizations or PTA's may also host. If not, take them to a thrift store!

Just one comment about saving toys for grandkids. My grandkids are at our house often, and have enjoyed most of the classic toys that I kept. We did save 2 pretty good sized bins of legos and the building plates. They are no longer in the nice sets with instructions… they are just all randomly mixed up. Our 8 and 5 year old grands play with them every time they are at our house. At home they build from new sets following instructions; here they build all kinds of creative things from their imaginations. Two different ways to play and learn- so..keep some of those legos!
Tonka trucks, basic wooden blocks, a doll house, Mr. Potato Head, nice books, and a tub of beanie babies (no, they were not a good “investment”) have also enjoyed a new life, but as this generation outgrows them they are going out the door. American Girl Dolls with a hair refresh make lovely Christmas and birthday presents.
All of that said, when your grands outgrow a toy you have saved, or if they never show an interest, it’s time to donate or let them take it home to their own house. Don’t pack it away again!

In reply to L. Sounds like what I have in my home! I am taking the dance costumes to my daughter - we have photos of her wearing them. She said she only wants a couple of the little ones. I made a boy scout album for my son and am taking that and his box of boy scout things to him on my next trip. I have photos of all these achievements.

What about high school and college memories? What about the whole bin of Boy Scout achievements for my two Eagles and the 8 years of dance costumes and several prom dresses from my daughter? Also, one son was a “collector” and the other had great parts in about 12 school plays. When things were built up, it’s hard to figure out what one or two things are meaningful to them? I’d go through it with them, but they are now busy with their careers and lives!
